A
new development has been the introduction of mass-market
VoIP services over broadband Internet access services, in
which subscribers make and receive calls as they would over
the telephone. This requires an analog telephone adapter
(ATA) to connect a telephone to the broadband internet connection.
One advantage of this Voice over IP Telephone service is
the ability to make and receive calls as you would at home,
anywhere in the world, at no extra cost. As calls go via
IP, this does not incur charges as call diversion does via
the PSTN, and the called party does not have to pay for
the call.
The Voice over IP Telephony, also know as Voice over IP
or short VoIP, is a way of connecting phones, not by using
the commonly used dedicated phone lines, but by using a
technique that has been developed for the internet: Internet
Protocol.
In order to implement the Voice over Telephone Service,
every device, either a normal looking phone, fax or a computer-based
softphone, receives an IP address. This address is unique
for every device that's connected to the same network.
All communications to and from each of these devices can
be done by using ordinary LAN equipment and can even be
mixed with other forms of datatransfers like those that
take place on the corporate LAN that has been used to connect
computers for years.
